Our client is the largest online real estate presence in Australia. They noticed a real penchant for Australians to repeatedly visit their real estate site, not always to buy or sell but to keep an eye on their neighborhood or look for interesting homes or home ideas. Sensing an opportunity, the company decided to extend their brand into providing ideas for home improvement. They had the consumer traffic, they had interested partners in the home improvement industry, and they had one significant competitive advantage – millions of photographs of home interiors and exteriors.

Crowdsourcing

They contracted with us to build a crowdsourcing application to categorize and tag these photographs. A principle reason they selected us was our taxonomy platform, Trajectory. Through Trajectory they could define the various “spaces of interest” – kitchens, dining rooms, pools – and associate “attributes of interest” – granite countertops, range hoods, twin sinks – with those spaces. Trajectory provided a number of features which allowed them to easily add, modify, and reference all of these different concepts easily through both web and application interfaces. What was needed was a way to get the crowd to quickly and accurately look at the images, determine their relevance, categorize them in the right space, and then tag the images with the appropriate attributes.
